In cities and counties thru out New York State the organizational structure of political parties are based on the election district. Each (E.D.) has a committee member (man or woman) who is elected by the enrollees of their respective political parties and they are members of the City Committee and County committee that are the leading bodies of their political party. Committee Members are responsible for maintaining good relations with their party's enrollees and other members of the community. They act as "shop stewards" if you will for their communities and deal with their grievances. They assemble the information necessary to pull out the vote on Election Day, register voters, and have a voice in selecting the candidates.
The purpose of community stewards is to build a political framework that will unite Organized Labor with workers in the community (organized and unorganized). It will be based on Election Districts (E.D.) that are the basic electoral unit in New York State. While we anticipate that most of the stewards will come from the unions any person or community group who share our values will be invited to participate on an equal basis. Like the Committee people of the political parties they will also be the Shop Stewards for their Election Districts and the community at large. Their year round work will strengthen the Unity between Organized Labor and the Community. At election time they will be a permanent nucleus cooperating with the mass turnout that we saw in the recent Labor campaigns.
THIS ORGANIZATIONAL PROCESS:
1. Will educate and bring more workers into electoral politics.
2. Will be a training ground for future LABOR candidates.
3. Will demonstrate to the community the strong roll Organized Labor plays in their welfare.
4. Will bring community concerns to the attention of Organized Labor.
5. Will bring the concerns of Organized Labor into the community.
6. Will create a friendly attitude towards Unions when we try to organize the shops they work in.
7. Will support Labor Friendly Legislation.
Will help establish the independent base that Organized Labor is working towards.
LABOR ISSUES AND COMMUNITY ISSUES
THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED
